President Obama wants to break the monopoly that a few companies have on internet access in many parts of the US and help more Americans get online.
Our President is calling for an end to state laws that limit broadband access. He wants to allow local communities to build their own municipal networks, like we have here in Tacoma with Tacoma Public Utilities’ Click! Network.
Thanks to the lobbying efforts of giant monopolies, 19 states have laws that prohibit cities from building their own such networks.
Today, speaking from Cedar Falls, Iowa, the President will explain why three out of four Americans live in areas where there is no competition between internet providers or not even access to high-speed broadband connections.
“Every American should have options for better, faster broadband,” said Jeff Zients, director of the White House’s national economic council, on Tuesday. “Broadband is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity for businesses, for families, and for our national competitiveness.”
“The President is calling to end laws that prevent broadband service completion,” Mr Zients told reporters on a call. “The president specifically is filing a letter with the [FCC] urging it to join this effort by addressing barriers inhibiting local communities from responding to the broadband needs of their citizens.”
This is good news for America! In Tacoma, we are already blessed to have Click! Network bringing competition to the giant monopoly. Thank you for supporting Advanced Stream Broadband Internet and Click! Cable TV
